The Hoge Boekel Herd

In the ‘Hoge Boekel’ area the ‘Hoge Boekel Herd’ can be found on pastures along the Bonekampweg (name of the road). In The Netherlands they walk outside in summer and winter; if the pastures are wet they spend the winter in a stable. Due to this way of life the breed is very healthy and has seldom problems with diseases. The veterinary is a rare visitor at the Hereford farms.

At present the bull Mendix Pollux H is used. He was imported from Denmark in December 1999. At the annual Dutch Hereford show in 1999 and 2000 the cow Hoge Boekel Sinie was elected as the best female bred in The Netherlands.

The Hereford calf

About the calf a lot can be told. The Hereford cow calves easily. The calf walks with its mother for about seven months and all mother’s milk is consumed by the calf, which is very natural. The female calf is mostly kept for further breeding. The bulls are slaughtered at an age of 15-22 months. During the last couple of months they are additionally fed with crushed barley.

We are against the use of substances, which artificially stimulate growth. The cattle food may not be contaminated with animal food products.Every year a number of animals is for sale.
